STUMPWORK WORKSHOPS
A step beyond embroidery.
The workshop begins with stumpwork/embossed/raised embroidery’s place in history. The politics, history and everyday life at the birth of stumpwork is not only thought provoking but also entertaining. The workshops will give you a sense of being part of that history and keeping our stitching history alive.
The foundation of stumpwork practice is covered in a practical session leading to the planning for your own designs and the selection of suitable subjects for work. This practice is then expanded to enhance the subject matter and what might result could be quite different from the original intention!
Stumpwork really does take on a life of its own. This is a new adventure to most students. They are encouraged to discover hidden talents.
Stumpwork opens up a new, exciting and constantly developing field of creative stitching.
Julie says, ‘I endeavour to make sure everyone leaves the workshops as excited and enthusiastic about this new stage in their stitching life as I was when I first discovered it.’
It takes about 4, one day sessions to produce a small piece of work. These sessions are spread over a month with ‘homework’ in between each session.
What to bring to a workshop:
Pictures/photos/designs/drawings for a piece of work you would like to reproduce. Don’t worry if you are not certain about what you have in mind straight away. There will always be something that triggers your imagination as we progress.
An embroidery hoop big enough to accommodate the design. (remember that the piece of work will be in miniature. A figure will stand about 8cm high).
Your thread box.
Fabric suitable for the background work. If you are unsure, this can be decided for your finished piece while you are engaged in the design stage of your work.
Small needles. (a large needle is too awkward).
What is supplied:
Stitching pads / Stuffing / Wire
As with talks these workshops can be run at JB Stumpwork where a light lunch will be provided or at your own venue of choice. At your own venue there will be a charge to cover traveling expenses.
